Lake
Jasper to Donnelly River Trek
Day
one
Navigate across the Donnelly River into the magnificent
pristine native forest and open woodlands of the D'Entrecasteaux National
Park. Here, beautiful red flowering Beaufortia shrub, and Melaleuca (paperbark
tree) wetlands nestle low in sandy undulating open Jarrah and Banksia
forest. The final leg of this route involves negotiating the tranquil
bird sanctuary shores of one of the Southwest's largest and deepest fresh
water lakes. Lake Jasper is a nature based tourist attraction three and
a half kilometres long by two kilometres wide. We establish camp on the
shore to enjoy evening food and drinks.
Day
two
Navigate through dense lush vegetation to arrive at
Quinelup Spring, and then through to the white cliffs and sands washed
by pure blue ocean on the southern coast. Traverse the cliff line, observe
schools of tuna fish in migration, to reach the moving sandbars of the
Donnelly River mouth. Establish camp amidst high cliffs, under the canopy
of paperbark trees while the river waters lap at your feet.
Day
three
Navigate from where the river meets the sea to the
upper reaches of the Donnelly river and boatlanding. Paddle through the
timeless meandering waterways, and tributaries, through character shaped
paperbark forest abounding in colourful bird life ( black swans, herons,
the rarely seen musk duck which swims with only its beak and eyes above
the water, sea eagles, and many more.) The silence and tranquility of
this meandering water world will leave you astounded that such a place
still exists. Complete the trek with an over night stay at the Karri Valley
Resort with three course meal and cooked breakfast the following morning
before departure.
